I LOVE CARLETON.
Tonight was my first night drinking here, and I had an absolutely fanfuckingtastic night. But every other night of New Student Week has been just about as awesome. It’s great to know I’m at a school where the people are open, friendly, and fun enough that they don’t necessarily need to drink to have a fucking good time. It’s great to know I can hang loose and have a blast with new people while sober.
Tonight was also my first night performing. The people here are truly SO accepting and SO warm and SO supportive of each other that I was pushed to sing and play guitar for the first time in front of the class of 2015 and the other New Student Week leaders. With Ted, a buddy down the hall, I tried out singing in front of a crowd for the first time. I wasn’t so much confident in my voice; rather, I was comfortable with the community. I felt sure that even if I fucked up, there would be enthusiastic woops and cheers to give me encouragement. Even if I was horrible, there would be hearty laughter, as though the mediocrity were intentional. There would be support in any situation.
So I did it with Ted. Say It Ain’t So by Weezer. I think I’ll try out for a cappella. If I don’t make it (I probably won’t), no biggie. I’ve got next year.
I think Carleton’s already made me a bit more adventurous.
On a side note, I was about 5 ft. from Schiller (Look up Carleton and Schiller. It’s a fucking great tradition) and my buddy Ted actually touched the sacred bust and threw his bass guitar aside in the process, breaking two strings and giving it a few dents. But I’m sure it was worth it. I would’ve done the same had I not been borrowing the guitar.
